The Magpies are out of the race to play finals in 09 but this did not inhibit them from playing their best football last Saturday against the Sandhurst Dragons.
The Dragons had the big incentive as they were playing to keep their finals aspirations alive, however the Pies were determined to put a spanner into the works. The Sandhurst boys jumped out of the blocks and at one stage in the 2nd quarter led by 5 goals, however we settled, composed ourselves and played some very good football. The game was in the balance until mid way through the last quarter when the Pies broke the shackles and went on to win by a very convincing 27 points. The Dragons hopes of playing finals had been snuffed out.
The Pies had many very good players last week but the top boys were Scott Sellers, Daniel Christmas (7 goals), Brodie Culpitt, Guy Marshall, Adam Culvenor, Jason Cordy, Orry Cross and Hayden Polglase.
The Reserves showed a big turn around in form when they celebrated a 13 point victory against top five team Sandhurst. The boys led at every change and thoroughly deserved the win against their more fancied opponents. Best players in the big win were Joel Maddern , Callum Cross, Loch Brennan, David Stephens, Clint Hughes, Bertie Cole and Trev Butcher.
The Under 18's were up against it when they played 2nd on the ladder Sandhurst. The Sandhurst team is a quality unit, however the boys acquitted themselves very well. Although beaten on the scoreboard they did not stop trying and at no stage was the white flag waved. Good players were Nathan Mitchell, James Rowbotham, Dale Hansford, Lachlan Chapman, Josh Daffy and Sean Moss.
I mentioned prior to the Kangaroo Flat game that Adam Culvenor was playing the milestone of 100 games. Unfortunately this important occasion did not take place as Adam sustained an injury that prevented him playing against the Flat. However last Saturday Adam did play his 100th game for the Pies and as usual his name appeared in the best players. Adam is a model of ultra consistency on the playing field and most respected off. Congratulations Adam Culvenor .
Next up the Pies travel down the Calder to take on the Gisborne Bulldogs. In recent years the Dogs have been a real powerhouse in the B.F,L.but some of their performances this year have not been up to their normal standard and a few cracks have opened. In their last game against Golden Square they suffered their biggest defeat at home since entering the B.F.L. Todays game will be a big challenge for our boys as it is always a danger to front good teams on the rebound. Beware of the wounded Bulldog.!!!
A big THANK YOU goes out to all the ladies who helped with baking etc for the catering for 400 people at the opening of the new Castlemaine Fire Station on last Sunday. Judy's team of helpers again performed at a very high standard as usual.
