The Gisborne Bulldogs handed out a football lesson last week when they comprehensively beat the Pies by 57 pts.
The Bulldogs were probably stung into action after suffering a huge defeat the previous game against Square and left no doubt as to their intentions. They ran down the ground in numbers, crashed the packs and created numerous opportunities for their forwards. In the end the pressure applied by the Bulldogs was too much for our boys. Our chances of victory were made much harder with the early injuries to Calvin Philp, Nathan Pope & Adam Culvenor, our bench was hamstrung. However full credit to the Bulldogs on their win.
The two standout players for the Pies were the veteran Lachie Brown and Guy Marshall. Other big contributors were Jason Cordy (4 gaols) Danny Christmas, Benny Rose, Scotty Sellers, Adam Culvenor, Mitch Williams and Chris Jardine.
The Reserves were up against a formidable opponent in Gisborne. The Bulldogs are placed 2nd on the ladder and they disposed of an undermanned Magpie outfit accordingly. The young Pies tried their heart out but the Dogs held too many trumps on the day. Good Players were Joel Maddern, Lachie Maltby, Craig O'Grady, Trev Butcher and Callum Cross.
The Under 18's are a very competitive unit but unfortunately because of injuries at senior level they cannot field their best team on the park each week. However for the development of the player and for long term future of the club it is imperative that this is the correct path. The standout players last week were the consistent Nathan Mitchell, Kyle McLean, Tom Ruggles, Lachie Chapman, Peter Ayres and J Leech.
The Club would like to congratulate Shaun McCann and his lovely wife Trish on the arrival of little Mitchell into the world last week. Nanna " E " is one hell of a proud grandma. The birth of bubs must be catchy at the moment as our loyal canteen workers Joan and Dennis George are also proud grandparents for the first time. A great week in Magpie land.
All players and supporters are reminded that after the last home game against South Bendigo (Aug 22nd) the Pies are holding their annual David McCann Special Effort at the Club Rooms. Please keep this date in mind as it is one of the great nights on the Magpie calendar.
