Castlemaine travelled to Country Vet oval to face BFL premiership favourites Golden Square in what always loomed as a tough day for the Magpies.
The Castlemaine senior side came out firing however, led by the Ford brothers, Reece and Lachlan and young players Jenkins and Fortune and were able to go into quarter time with a one point advantage.
In the second term Castlemaine again started well with McMurtrie lively and Christmas providing a strong target up forward, however in the second half of the quarter Golden Square steadied and were able to add quick goals to go into the long break with a 27 point advantage.
After the long break the powerful Golden Square team flexed its muscle and showed why they are the team to beat with a 10 goal quarter snuffing out any hopes of a Magpie upset.
In the last quarter Golden Square continued to press home their advantage running out winners by 105 points in what was a lesson for the young Magpies side.
In the reserves division an undermanned Castlemaine side was always under pressure from the slick Golden Square combination. With Nic McDonald, David Stephens and Lachlan Chapman working hard in the middle, Loche Brennan defending strongly across half back and young players Darren Colley and Peter Bertoncini leading from the front the Magpies tried hard but in the end were simply outclassed by the strong Square combination.
In the under 18 division the undefeated Magpie team had high hopes against the traditionally powerful Golden Square boys however the Bulldogs quickly established their dominance with a 6 goal opening quarter and never looked back.
Castlemaine were well served by Tayler Watson, Captain Josh Adamson, Nathan Archer, Jackson Hood, Sam Gale and Zac Plant but will come away knowing there is much work to be done in order to reach the standards set by the opposition.
In netball results the A grade side went down to a strong opposition 82 – 22 with Chelsea Williams and Lacey Culpitt leading the way. In A Reserve, Stephanie Silvagni and Kelsey Fyffe tried hard for Castlemaine but could not prevent a 47 – 18 defeat for the Magpies.
In B grade the Magpie girls fought hard led by Maree Bagley and Tilly Baud but were overrun 64 -23 in the end result.
In under 17 action Eliza Fitzpatrick and Abbey White continued their strong start to the season in a 40 – 15 defeat for the young Magpies.
