Round 2 Write Up
13-04-2010

Football conditions well and truly arrived on Sunday as the Castlemaine Football and Netball Club travelled over to Hedges Oval in Maryborough. In a match rescheduled to Sunday following heavy rain making Princess Park unavailable both sides were confronted with cold, windy conditions.

In the early game the young Magpies once again showed they will be a formidable combination this year with a strong start against the Maryborough side. With plenty of run and drive from Winstanley and Plant Castlemaine kicked away to an early lead in a fairly scrappy start due to the conditions. Colley and Hood were strong in defence and didn’t allow Maryborough the opportunity to take advantage of the wind at any stage as Castlemaine built a solid lead by three quarter time, despite being a little inaccurate in front of goal.Coaches Len Watson and Geoff Deppeler were not satisfied and urged their young charges to finish the game strongly. The young magpies did not disappoint banging on 5 goals in the final term to run out winners by 45 points. Ed Couthard was once again dangerous in front of goal with 3.

The reserves side, missing a few players due to the late switching of the match to Sunday, held steadfast against the breeze in the first term with Dale Hansford and Matt Plumridge defending strongly. In the second term Castlemaine failed to make use of the breeze with the Maryborough side running harder and demonstrating more commitment to the cause. After coaches Craig Ginnivan and Len Watson handed out a good old fashioned spray during the half time break a much more determined Castlemaine side entered the field in the second half. Led by Luke Cawthan’s run and penetrating kicking around the ground, Trevor Butcher floating around across halfback and with Stuart Dunn running hard throughout, Castlemaine were much more competitive but were unable to transfer their efforts onto the scoreboard. The final siren saw the side record a disappointing loss with much work needed on the training track this week.

In the Senior match both sides were faced with difficult conditions as the wind grew stronger throughout the afternoon.Maryborough opened the game kicking with the breeze and dominated play but failed to capitalize on the scoreboard with Castlemaine’s pressure leading to many behinds being kicked. With conditions not suiting big men, Castlemaine needed plenty from their running players and Ford, Culvenor and Rose took the challenge in the second quarter running hard and creating opportunities for the forward line. With a late burst of goals including a 50 metre bomb on the siren from Cordy, Castlemaine entered the half time break just 8 points down.In the third term Maryborough made good use of the breeze with accurate kicking allowing them to bang on 5 goals straight. In contrast Castlemaine with the same number of shots on goals managed only 5 behinds to go into the three quarter time huddle 33 points behind. Castlemaine needed early goals in the final term and an early Christmas goal gave Castlemaine a chance with the aid of the breeze in the last term. Maryborough were able to steady however and kicked away once the game was sealed to run out comfortable winners by 64 points in a result that didn’t really reflect the tightness of the contest.

The Castlemaine sides will next week make the trek to Country Vet Oval to take on BFNL premiership favourites Golden Square in what will be a real test for the Castlemaine side.
